Project 52: Monday Morning

This particular Monday morning I was "working from home", writing reports. I had taken on a short term contract with my old real job, in between other locum gigs and whilst I was going through the process for my new job. The hourly rate was just too good to refuse. To explain the photo, I had two indoor, hairless cats staring me down during this early stage of the three week gig. Creepy!

Project 52: Sunday Evening

Ohhh, we have been a bit slack with the Project 52 pics and posts at the end of 2013, as life has clearly got in the way! I am going to set up the final batch as weekly posts, so here goes!

This was the Sunday night where I was discovering the range of movies available to me on the full set of channels of pay TV at my housesitting gig! I was in a house in the outer north west of Melbourne, and actually enjoyed being in one place for a decent amount of time. A rare occasion when this transient nomad stayed in most nights, and absorbed movie after movie, and loved it!

Project 52: Saturday Morning

This Saturday morning I was housesitting in a place that I seriously did not want to leave - with a kitchen that made me want to stay home and cook! Imagine! Everything is where you need to find it, it's laid out perfectly, it has everything. I kept saying this is the kind of house I would like when I grow up. Ha!

Since doing the Below The Line food challenge, I have craved the Eggs In Tomato from the menu plan I used, and have made it several times since. Yum!

Project 52: Friday Morning

The view from the front gate from my last housesitting assignment, as I set off to walk to work. At that house it was just a 9 minute walk to my current locum gig - and I could see the tops of the Melbourne CBD buildings from right there. Perfect spot, and a lucky friend-of-a-friend connection set it up.

Project 52: Thursday Morning

When I was housesitting in Prahran, this was my breakfast view, into the little courtyard of light and huge tropical plants. Like a little jungle of peace. The house was gorgeous - an assignment I found from the House Carers website, and was chosen to caretake through an interview process. Living the dream of not renting, and living almost how the other half live!

Housesitting In My Home Town – A Way To Keep The Travel Feel Alive

Since I have returned home from my Summer in Toronto last August I have managed to housesit all around Melbourne, which has provided me with the freedom of not committing to a particular area, nor lock me into a lease. It also means I have not had to accumulate furniture and other “stuff” again, and I am all but a pocket of savings and a plane ticket away from travel again!

I started out doing this as a way to wait out the process of gaining ongoing work, and deciding what suburb to live in. But as I continue working as a locum and given that I have managed to string many of these housesitting gigs together, I can’t imagine joining the rental market again anytime soon.

Many of these housesitting assignments have been through posting my availability on Facebook and a friend of mine has been going away. This had me covered for several months, as unsurprisingly I have many friends who also travel a fair bit. Using their annual leave in one hit means that I have had one month stints at a few places. Then, as the word spreads that this is what I am doing, I have been connected to friends of friends, who were also seeking a housesitter for their time away.

Then, to add to my search of this very different way of life - which was initially just a cool idea, and is now becoming my adopted way of living - I signed up to House Carers. This site allows people to post their housesitting needs, and assignments range from a week or so, to several months. I have applied for a few, and completed one through the ad and interview process, where I looked after chickens and guinea pigs for a month in a beautiful well-off suburb of Melbourne. I have just interviewed for another, to care for a couple of precious inside cats.

The reassurance of having someone in your home while you are away means that you know what you are returning to (provided you have screened your housesitter, I guess!). No surprise burst water pipes or break-ins to deal with when you arrive home over-tired and straight off a long haul flight. Collecting the mail is also a bonus of having a housesitter, which means there is no tell-tale signs of absence – the fact that someone is coming and going from your home can deter any would-be burglars. I have stayed somewhere with priceless artworks, so having someone home whilst the homeowners were away was a helpful security option. Of course, the pet care is the other main element to housesitting. I have taken care of dogs at a couple of housesitting gigs now, which has included feeding, walking, and general company for the pup. One interview I went to for an advertised assignment explained that she had investigated the option of using a kennel to take care of her dog whilst she was away, but the costs for this was going to be around $1000 for her dog. Ouch!

The arrangement is usually an exchange of services – the homeowner or renter allows me somewhere to stay, and in exchange I take care of their animals, water their garden and collect their mail, and be a presence in their home in their absence. To date, I have not been required to contribute to bills even though I have offered, and I have not been paid to stay (which many people who hear about what I am doing always seem to ask!).

The more I do this, the more references I have to provide for my next gig. A range of people who can verify that I have housesat for them, and cared for their beloved pets, and this helps enormously with applying for an advertised assignment on a website like House Carers. When applying to such an advert, my advice is to focus on what you can offer the person needing someone to look after their home and furry or scaly family members, any experience you may have that matches their needs, and enough about yourself for them to get a feel for whether they could have you live in their house while they are away.

I wouldn’t actually be able to do this without a safety net for the gaps between housesitting gigs, and I am blessed to be able to camp out in one of my best mate’s spare room when this happens. It’s actually really lovely to have these breaks of familiarity in the middle of staying in strangers' homes, and I really appreciate such support.

This style of living is not for everyone, with the constant movement, and living out of my backpack. And the uncertainty of where I will be living in the next few months. It means that I don’t have a lot of range and variety when it comes to work clothes, based on what I have in my backpack, but really what does that matter at the end of the day?! I am saving loads, with my eyes on my next travel plans; I am also getting to explore new neighbourhoods of Melbourne which I would never have otherwise had the chance to. I am avoiding the rent trap, and am feeling like a traveller in my own city!

The real dream would be extending this way of living to housesitting around the world, as a new accommodation option when travelling! House Carers has so many assignments advertised every day, from all corners of the world. Endless possibilities!

By all means, drop me a line if you need a housesitter! Or if you dream about the same freedom, join the House Carers website for a small fee and check out some of the potential assignments that could give you a holiday option near or far from home!

I have included some affiliate links within this post, whereby if you decided to join House Carers, you would help me with the costs of my next membership. I have been drafting this post, and collection of places and pet pictures for many months though, and the experiences are real!

Project 52: Wednesday Evening

This particular Wednesday night was the night all Aussie cricket fans had been counting down to for weeks - the start of the Ashes series over in England. Regardless of the worry about the team and how we might actually go, there was excitement for the start of the First Test - butterflies-in-the-stomach type excitement!

I was housesitting a pretty amazing house, and had Graham join me for pizza and mulled wine for the first session. Perfect! Watching play get started from the other side of the world, this night was the beginning of seven weeks of serious sleep deprivation!

Project 52: Wednesday Morning

This Wednesday morning I was waiting for the tram to work, from my housesitting location in North Melbourne. Chilly Winter morning, with sunshine to burn off the early fog, and wake you up to start the day - I love Melbourne!

Fandango

Weekend brunch is a my favourite meal, and finding somewhere good to go is always a preoccupation of mine. Fandango in North Melbourne is a find, that ticks the boxes!

An all day breakfast is a must! I hate being tied down to someone else's schedule, even more so on a weekend!

It has kitch-ey decor, with plates and cups from the 70s, and a whole host of knicknacks all around the walls and on the tables from that time. So cute!

Housesitting lets me explore new food places, in new neighbourhoods, although to be honest I had been here before because one of my sister's lives in the area.

Fandango is a couple of doors down from the other one in the strip for which people line up for for hours. When I was at Fandango, they managed to seat each party that wandered in...whilst there was a line up at the other place.

The time I went was also just after completing my Live Below The Line challenge, and so I was craving all sorts of foods, but was also wary of going too crazy after the week of deprivation.

I had scrambled eggs, avocado, tomato and mushrooms, on sourdough toast. With a latte before and after. It was an awesome breakfast, savoured and enjoyed.

The service was great, friendly and fast, and ranks as a very good brunch spot in my book!

Project 52: Tuesday Morning

This Tuesday morning has me catching a tram to my locum job, from my housesitting gig at the time. This assignment was closer to the office in terms of travel time. Still loving the transient life I have built for myself in my city that I call home!

(Eeeeee! Loving those piggy curls!)

Project 52: Monday Evening

I originally had plans for this Monday night, but they didn't eventuate, so a night in watching the rare Monday Night Footy it was. I was at my housesitting gig which just finished this weekend, actually, so I was lucky that the one tv channel that was tuned in showed the match! You get what you pay for, right! Ha!

Groceries For 5 Days, At $9.70: Live Below The Line

With the task of shopping for my groceries for the next 5 days, as part of the Live Below The Line food challenge, I had to plan, stake out where to go, and actually shop around today!  These are things I NEVER usually do!

I am a "go to the closest, most convenient store, and just make it up as I go along" kinda grocery shopper. I am not a cook, nor someone who plans meals very far in advance - plus I usually live on my own, so meals for one are nothing exciting; not something I put any serious thought or effort into. That's why I eat out a lot, with mates, and the joy of tasting someone else's culinary efforts!

Most lunches I ate last week cost almost $10 each. And each pint I drank yesterday while watching the footy cost more than $10 each. As next week has been looming, I have been pretty mindful of that figure...the World Bank's estimate of what people living below the poverty line are surviving on each day.

I am following Julie Goodwin's meal plan for the challenge this Monday through to Friday. Although, frankly, I don't know where she went to get her items at her quoted prices!

The eggs and the pumpkin caused me the most dilemma - I actually researched online before deciding which supermarket I would go to within a decent range of my current housesitting apartment, to find 12 eggs anywhere near Julie's quoted price. As it was, I did not find the online quoted price on the shelf, and went investigating down the street, mid-shop, to find a dozen in a Chinese grocery, at closer to the right price. The pre-cut pumpkin in the supermarket was my blow out expense, and I did consider heading off to the market to see if I could get it smaller, and for less. I mean, that's what someone living on $2 a day would have to do! But in the end, I ditched some other items, mindful that the Friday dinner of "leftovers" in the plan was pretty light on, and anticipating that that may be the hardest meal not to cheat with!

I had to forgo the fresh garlic I had in my basket, and did not get the 500g of salt on the shopping list. In fact, I didn't get any salt. Maybe I will need to collect some from a fast food place, if I decide I need it. Don't judge me! It did not fit within the $10!

I have a jar of crushed garlic in the pantry, and have worked out that I can use about 15g of that, within the 30c I have left from my $10 budget. Part of the challenge rules allow this - although does not allow people to gift me any food, to help me out during the week! Well, without it counting towards my budget, and now I have no room for that. Nor for coffee.

Right, now to cook my breakfast for tomorrow and also lunch, tonight - these meals take planning ahead!

You can support my challenge, and the quest to assist those living like this, in extreme poverty everyday, to rise above it here. A million thanks to all those who have kicked in money to the cause already - you are awesome!

FIDO, The Big Dog

I spotted The Big Dog when I was on the train, travelling into the city whilst I am housesitting in the North Eastern suburbs of Melbourne at the moment, and when I looked up what I thought I had seen, it was confirmed that this piece of art near the Fairfield train station is indeed what I thought it was!

FIDO, or the Fairfield Industrial Dog Object, as he is called, fits the bill - he is bigger than the real thing, alright! I didn't realise he was out here, in the outskirts of Melbourne. A bonus find!

Introducing Project 52

Jess over on Fushmush approached me about being part of her Project 52 this year. I followed along in 2009 when she and Sue from Noodlebowl did it, from different parts of the world, and loved the series.

The idea is that we both take a photo from the same time of the day on the same day, and post them alongside each other. A kind of parallel life experience for the year, wherever we are at the time, whatever we are doing. Jess joked that it could be 'boring housewife v dynamic globe trotter', but really after my initial travels of the year it may well be "wonderwoman working awesome job and managing a toddler v homeless bum"...who knows what the year holds!

This morning where I am, in Melbourne, one of my tasks at my housesitting gig before I leave for work is to feed the dog and make sure he is all set for the day. Of course, he bounds out to eat as if I have not fed him for days and days, but swear I am feeding him as instructed! Ha!

Melbourne Food Trucks

Housesitting in the Northern inner suburbs of Melbourne has let me track down the food trucks with some ease, something I have been keen to check out as the popularity of them grows.

I love the idea of these little pop up food stalls, and watching as their wares are prepared right there in the truck is very impressive.

Both the Taco Truck and Beatbox Kitchen pop by very near my current location on a regular basis, so I have managed to sample both.

The best way to plan your trek to hunt them down is to keep an eye on the Where The Truck At website, which updates a couple of times during the day, with lunch and dinner time locations. Plus the map lets you see exactly where you are aiming for.

Both times I visited for dinner there was a little line at each of the trucks, but with friendly staff buzzing within who informed each customer how long the wait was, no one minded.

These gorgeous Summer days saw people popping over from a cricket match in the nearby park, and also saw groups of people gathering around the grass in front of the trucks, picnic rugs and drinks brought along for the perfect dinner.

Beatbox Kitchen serves two burgers, a meat and a mushroom one, and also a side of fries. The flavours of the sauces for the burger was amazing, and made it well worth the walk to find the truck's location.

Beatbox is decorated to be a little sound system with themed menu items, and the extra touch of an old radio cassette player adding to the experience.

The Taco Truck also had an impressive menu for a truck kitchen, with single tacos ranging from chicken and fish, and potato varieties. A combo of two of any combination, plus chips and guacamole, was the perfect dish for an evening meal, road and park-side.

There are new truck ideas popping up all the time, and more of them mean that they are collectively getting to more suburban locations. The perfect spontaneous answer to the evening or lunchtime meal this Summer around Melbourne!

She watches over the comings and goings at Brunswick station, and is so eye-catchingly enchanting! The examples of the rat race she must see from her vantage point!

Brighton Beach Houses

The pretty, colourful beach houses along Brighton Beach are often listed as sights and icons of Melbourne - although this time whilst I was housesitting in Brighton was only the second time I have even been down to see them.

They are a decent way out of the city, a long train ride or drive down the bay, so easily a day trip.

My first weekend of my 2 week housesitting gig I walked down to the beach and all the way along Middle Brighton to find the Beach Houses.  A sunny Spring day, there were plenty of people along the sand, soaking up the much missed sun.

Each house has it's own colourful and distinctive design, with a couple in a state of renovation.  According to the Brighton Beach House Association, these 82 houses remain as they originally were, in that they have timber framing, weatherboards and corrugated iron roof, with no amenities hooked up to them.  They are also painted to guidelines, so the row retains it's character. The houses are used as change and storage facilities.

This morning I said goodbye to this beautiful neighbourhood, and the gorgeous house I was sitting, as my time there is up. This is certainly not an area of Melbourne I would even imagine being able to live in, so this was such a treat to live the lives of someone else for two weeks!

Like A Cat

When I returned home from Toronto and told my old work crew that I had lined up some housesitting pretty much straight away, my old boss commented that I am like a cat - in that I always seem to land on my feet.

I am into my second housesitting gig now since being back in Melbourne, and have one lined up for most of December. Perfect!  My thoughts are that I am collecting a couple of these gigs to obtain solid references, and then I could use housesitting as my way to travel long term, or simply to save to travel more.

Living like these means I am able to explore new neighbourhoods, which is pretty cool. It's also win-win, because I get somewhere to stay, and the owners of the home know that there is someone here while they are away, keeping it safe.

I do have a couple of gaps, so am working on my homelessness now.  Hopefully my good experiences with AirBnB will continue in my home city!

I have managed to complete that "landing on my feet" sentiment to it's fullest this week, by landing some locum Social Work work, on a short term contract. I have work for the month of November at this stage, after being away from paid work for 6 whole months.  Again, perfect!  And I have found that my knowledge of the Disability service system is still intact - programs may have changed their names, but it's all essentially the same.  In just 3 days this week, I feel like I am back to the work I belong to, even feeling like I have made a difference, and helped people in difficult situations.  Right back on my feet!

Both perfect scenarios after packing up my things, and selling everything off, to travel more.  Housesitting and locuming will put me in a good position to save for my next adventures, and keep me moving.  No sitting still here!

This cheeky kitty was found along Queen Street West in Toronto.
